Ninite Easy PC Setup and Multiple App Installer - Great For Win7 Upgrades
Ninite - This software is fantabulous! Normally, when I reformat a PC I’d go one by one to get the latest versions of Firefox, Skype, Notepad++, etc… and practically all the relevant software is there. This is a massive time-saver in installing new software after a clean install. Works on XP, Vista, and Win7. Timely since I just reformatted 2 PCs for the house just today.
You just check the software you need, hit submit, and download the installer that Ninite has customized for you. Just leave it running and after a few minutes or up to 1 hour, all the software you needed is already installed.
I recommend as a minimum for your basic home PC:
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
- Skype
- Digsby for multiple IM (disable the sending of statistics in Options since this hogs your bandwidth)
- Songbird for Music. iTunes if you have an iPod.
- VLC
- Foxit Reader
- CutePDF (so you can print any document as a PDF)
- avast! antivirus
- All the Runtimes (Flash, .net, Java, Silverlight)
- uTorrent
- Dropbox - 2GB free online file sharing and backup
- CCleaner
- Revo Uninstaller
- 7-Zip (instead of WinRAR)
For writing documents, just use Google Docs or install OpenOffice, if you have to. Or if you have an extra flash disk just get the PortableApps version of Open Office so you can just run it from your USB stick.
What I Love to Do and What I Do
I love to write. I love the web. I taught myself HTML (that’s the programming language that browsers read and makes a webpage) when I was 12 back when per-minute 28.8 kbps dial-up Internet was queen. The browser I think was Compass or Netscape Navigator and I chatted on IRC to meet fellow geeks because I couldn’t find local friends who I can talk about the net with. I loved coding using Notepad and uploading to Geocities.
If you don’t understand any word I just said, you don’t have to. I’m just saying I got hooked to the Internet industry before my teens — then lost my way for a few years in between — but now happily back in the Internet world.
Stuff I work on involve web design, front-end development, content management systems (CMS) like Wordpress and Frog CMS, internet and social media marketing, online payments, web copywriting, site metrics analysis and reporting, email marketing management.
Entrepreneurship / Technology / Personal Finance Writing
In 2006, I started a personal finance blog Sexy Money Genius that was recognized as one of the Top Emerging Influential Blogs that year. I also manage technology startup / entrepreneurship blog called Pinoy Web Startup for Pigmata Media — that I wish I could write more frequently for in the coming weeks. Pinoy Web Startup won Best Business/Entrepreneurship Blog in the Philippine Blog Awards in 2008.
Pigmata Media is where I work. We’re a boutique web design and development firm and internet marketing agency. Always on the lookout for fresh talent who wants a startup environment to join us.
Work Style
There are days when I just want to hear the buzz of (other people’s) conversation so I like to work out of The Coffee Bean or Starbucks or the corner coffee shop. Some days I have to be at the office to hash out project details and general management tasks. I’m very likely the one to answer the phone when someone rings.
People I Work With
I’m lucky compared to others who don’t get to choose who they work with. The clients I work with are just fab, demanding, but understanding and open to discussing details. I respect that they manage their businesses well and I do what I can to make their dream in the web-based world a reality.
